Just minutes from Music City, USA, USTRC ropers enjoyed the Tennessee Championships hosted by Jx2 Productions
and John Johnson. The event was held at Ag Expo Park in Franklin, Tennessee and it was quite a spectacle. Over 400
ropers from 18 different states attended the event and enjoyed the nice weather and beautiful facility.
The Open division was all about headers Judah Fleming and Beverly Robbins. No they were not roping together, but
they did dominate the roping. Fleming teamed up with Ashlee Swedenburg and Phillip Kelce for a first and second place
finish, while Robbins teamed up with Kyle Lawrence and Nat Stewart for third and fourth place. Fleming and Swedenburg
won the average and took home $2522 in cash for roping five steers in 47.54 seconds.
Wrangler National Finals Rodeo header Chad Masters grabbed a heel rope and entered the #15 Handicap with
Kentucky header Austin Nettleship. The paring proved to payoff as Nettleship and Masters won the average by over six
seconds. The win gave the team $2216, trophy Gist bits, and a USTRC National Finals Shoot Out. Second place was
Rusty Shaw and Dane Brister and third place went to Dwayne Heatherly and Nick Griffith.
Sonny Gould and Brian Walker teamed up for a victory lap in the #13. The duo won the average with a time of 35.05 on
four steers. That gave them $2686, trophy Gist bits, and USTRC National Shoot Outs. Second place in the average was
Mitchell Hembree and Phillip Kelce and third place went to Todd Proffitt and Kelsey Parchman. DeWayne Heatherly and
Shane Johnson won the incentive average.
JD Treharne and Marshall Hall from Ohio and Kentucky got together in the #12 for the average win. The pair roped four
steers in 36.48 seconds for the victory. They won trophy Gist bits, $2820, and a USTRC National Finals Shoot Out. Mandy
Waugh came all the way from Florida and she finished second and fourth place in the average with Philip Kelce and Adam
Plyler respectively. Mitch Dixon and Michael K Jones won third in the average. Michael Walton and Josh Rouse from
Michigan took first place in the incentive.
The second day of roping began with the Gold Plus division. Sonny Gould was back for more, this time roping with Scott
Seiler. The Tennessee/Florida team took first place with a time of 33.42 seconds on four head. The win gave them $2860,
USTRC Gold Plus National Shoot Outs, and trophy Gist buckles. Second place went to Chuck Woodard and Wilbur Lee
Tucker or Wyatt Lane and his country music fans call him. Third place went to Mike Colley and Glen Terrell. Chris Riner
and Steven Horne teamed up to win the incentive average. Second place went to Mandy Waugh and Casey Paris.
Producer John Johnson found some time to rope and entered the #11 division with Ben O Gambrell. The team won the
average with a time of 37.66 seconds on four. The win gave them $3670, Martin trophy saddles, and a USTRC National
Shoot Out. Mandy Waugh again made her way to the winner’s circle as she and Marshall Hall won second place. Clay and
Stuart Mitchell won third place in the average. Chris Riner and Steven Horne won the incentive average.
The #10 division wound things up on Saturday. Jacob Calloway and Justin Hurst teamed up to take first place in the
average. They won $4610, trophy Martin saddles, and a USTRC National Shoot Out. Hurst was on fire as he also placed
second in the average with header Greg Miller. Bill Johnson and Bob Coppock won third in the average. The incentive win
went to BJ Pruitt and Logan Crabtree.
John Johnson struck again in the #9 roping. He teamed up with Doylene Corlew for the average victory. They took
home Martin trophy saddles, $4580, and USTRC National Finals Shoot Outs. Second went to the team of Stacy Polk and
Vernon Inman II. Tom and Catherine Casey won the incentive average and then with a time of 10.64 in the short round they
won third place in the main average. Mike Woolven and Kenny Craig teamed up for fourth in the average.
Alabama and Kentucky took the top honors in the #8 Pick/Draw. George Nunn and Eddy Glenn II won the average with
a time of 27.58 seconds on three steers. The win was worth $4130, USTRC National Shoot Outs and trophy Gist buckles.
Second in the average went to Daniel Ferrell and Brian Cornelison and third place was Jacob Calloway and Russell Tallent.
The Tennessee Championships came off without a hitch and was a great place to spend the weekend. The event
featured more than 1260 teams and the weather and facility were suitable for everyone.
