Some things are just meant to be, and the Muddy River Classic at the Agricenter Show Place Arena in Memphis,
Tennessee is just meant to be a great USTRC event. Ropers from all around the area made the trip to Memphis to
participate for all the cash and prizes that were awarded. The set up and the cattle made for a very fast roping, but it was
an enjoyable experience for those who attended.
Kelsey Parchman was the dominating factor of the Open Division. Parchman teamed up with Kollin VonAhn and Cole
Bigbee to finish first and third in the main average. Parchman and VonAhn roped five steers in 34.65 seconds to win
$3512 and trophy leather halters. Codee Reynolds and Jake Pianalto won second in the average with a time of 35.68
seconds on five steers. Parchman and Bigbee won $1404 for a time of 36.79 seconds on five. Matt Griswell and Cody
Gatlin claimed the incentive average with a time of 32.08 on four steers.
Ralph Williams and Ben Hogan were the team to beat in the #15 handicap. The duo caught five steers and 34.92
seconds to win $3444, USTRC National Finals Shoot Outs and trophy leather halters. Second place went to Sal Cannizzaro
and Cody Gatlin with a time of 35.61 seconds on five. Austin Nettleship and Derrick Crawford took third place with a
time of 36.28 seconds on five.
Williams continued his winning ways by claiming first place in the average of the #13 with partner Eric Flurry. Williams
and Flurry roped four steers in 29.18 seconds to win $3564, and USTRC National Finals Shoot Outs. They also took home
the trophy leather halters. Cole Becht and Bob Knudsen finished second with a time of 30.56 seconds and claim $2376
and Regional Finals Shoot Outs. Austin Nettleship, and Gatlin finished third with a time of 31.38 on four. Cannizzaro and
Harvey McDaniel won the incentive with a time of 25.14 seconds on three steers and claimed $800, USTRC National Finals
Shoot Outs and trophy leather halters.
The top six callbacks in the #12 short round were very close. In fact, it was a tight race all the way to the end. When
the dust settled and the smoke cleared, it was the team of Steven McCormick and Jerred Tubbs, who finished first place
with a time of 32.10 seconds on four steers. They took home $4488, USTRC National Finals Shoot Outs, and trophy Martin
saddles. Second place went to the team of Josh Gordon and Cody Sing with a time of 32.67 seconds on four. They took
home $2992, and USTRC Regional Finals Shoot Outs. Third place went to the Missouri team of Luke Tyree, and Scott
Manier. Derek Alexander and Ben Gambrell won the incentive average with a time of 27.44 seconds on three steers.
The second day of team roping action began in style. The day kicked off with the Gold Plus Division, and it was the
husband-wife team of Paula and Bob Knudson who took first place in the average. They roped four steers in 34.33
seconds to win $3540, USTRC National Gold Plus Shoot Outs and trophy Gist buckles. It was unfortunate, as the high
callback team of Kevin Holtz from Indiana in Stewart Bigbee from Alabama roped their steer clean, but had an illegal head
catch that cost them the roping. Second in the average went to Mike Sibley and James Carter with a time of 34.94 seconds
on four. They took home $2360 and USTRC Gold Plus National Shoot Outs. Third place went to Jim Milam and Mark
Weddle. Milam and Weddle also claimed victory in the century bonus. The incentive winners of the roping were John
Crutchfield and Jay De Wright with a time of 25.39 seconds on three. The pair took home $1690 and USTRC Gold Plus
National Shoot Outs along with trophy Gist buckles.
The #11 division proved to be an interesting roping as well as a very tight race. Steve Tade and Tony Schindler took
the top honors with a time of 34.77 seconds on four steers. They won $5,790, USTRC National Finals Shoot Outs and
trophy Martin saddles. Second place was Stacy Crowe and Jason McDaniel with a time of 34.83 seconds on four. They
won $3660 and USTRC National Finals Shoot Outs. Steve Trim and Billy Vought finished right behind them with a time of
34.85 seconds on four steers to win $2510, and USTRC Regional Shoot Out s. Bart Stallings and Evin Burke were 27.45
seconds on three to claim the incentive average. They won $800, USTRC Regional Shoot Outs and trophy leather halters
for their efforts. They roped their final steer in the short round and ended up fifth place in the average to add $1740 to
their earnings.
The final roping of the day was the #10 division. Richard Roberts and Ray Black were the high team back in the short
round. They roped their steer clean and ended up with a time of 33.86 seconds on four. However, the second callback
team of Kelly Ogden and Randy Curtis roped their final steer in 7.11 seconds to bring their total on four to 33.02 seconds.
That was enough to give them the win of the average, and thus they took home $5,870, USTRC National Finals Shoot Outs
and trophy Martin saddles. Roberts and Black tied with Peter Anderton and Stephen Bland to split second and third in the
main average. Each team took home $3125, and USTRC National Finals Shoot Outs. Dylan Campbell and Tony Schindler
won the incentive average with a time of 27.68 seconds on three to earn $800, USTRC Regional Finals Shoot Outs and
trophy leather halters. The team unfortunately took in no time in the short round and did not place in the main average.
The final day of the Muddy River Classic found the Agricenter Show Place Arena buzzing with activity. Ropers from all
walks of life and all shapes and sizes were ready for competition. The stage was set for a tremendous conclusion to an
excellent event.
The team of Kelly Ogden and JD Neergaard found themselves in the high callback position of the #9 division. Joe Marley
and Charles Crafton were second callback with a time of 30.43. That time on three steers landed them the incentive
victory. They started the short round with $800 in their pockets, USTRC National Finals Shoot Outs, and trophy leather
halters. Ogden and Neergaard, however roped a leg in the short round to finish third place in the main average giving
them $1934, and USTRC Regional Shoot Outs. Darrell and Steve Weathers came from the fourth callback position to win
the fast time of the short round and the average. They pocketed $3984, USTRC National Finals Shoot Outs, and trophy
Martin saddles.
Lain Butler and Harold Lane qualified to the short go round in the third callback position and roped their final steer in 8.43
seconds to bring their three-steer total to 26.41. The feat gave them the win of the average in the #8 Pick/Draw. They won
$2660, USTRC National Finals Shoot Outs, and trophy Gist buckles. Second place went to the high callback team of
Shane Thomas and Tyler Jackson. They received $1774, USTRC National Shoot Outs, and trophy Gist buckles. The
Alabama team of George Pyron and Grant Wills finished third to take home $1404, USTRC National Finals Shoot Outs, and
Gist buckles.
The Muddy River Classic finished off in grand style. It was a great USTRC event and more than 1530 teams competed for
well over $152,000 in cash alone. Producer John Johnson and his crew really rolled out the red carpet to welcome and
accommodate each and every contestant and attendant. Memphis, Tennessee might be known as, ”The City of Blues," but
February 23-24, 2008 it was a city for team roping.
